Preparing For Price Increases |
| |
Steel prices are on the increase and have been since the beginning of 2008. It’s not a local or regional occurrence but a factor of our global economy. Anyone involved in the construction of self-storage facility would like to avoid these increases but in most cases the best we can do is to prepare for them. The reasons for the increases are numerous and we are seeing them with every type of material that contains steel (roofing, siding, framing, decking, doors, and trusses)...

Wind and
Metal Buildings |
| |
Few of us are ignorant
to the destructive forces of wind. With recent historic events brought to our
attention via our television and computer screens, including widespread destructive ‘F5’ tornadoes
and ravaging Gulf Coast hurricanes, it is both plainly and painfully clear how
destructive winds can quickly reduce even the most thoughtfully engineered building
to ruins.
And while no structure can be expected to withstand the full blunt
of a category 5 hurricane or its F5 tornado cousin, metal buildings that are
not built to face the winds associated with their geographical location, are
susceptible to damage making them unsightly, or worse, unsafe. To learn more
about how damaging winds effect a metal building and the ways in which such forces
can be countered...

| Maximizing Tax Benefits When Acquiring or Developing Self-Storage Facilities |

| Radiant Heating |
| |
The Laws of Thermodynamics continue to challenge self-storage design innovation. While relative humidity, condensation and traditional forced air distribution systems are being reevaluated in the current toxic mold and mildew environment, commercial hydronic radiant heating has begun to see a wide acceptance within the U.S. and European design communities as an alternative to forced-air heating systems. As a result, today’s self-storage developers, owners and operators are beginning to embrace radiant heating...more |

| The Pitfalls of Construction |
| |
All developers whether new to construction or experienced in many projects have the need to do their due diligence, establish a plan, assemble a team and create a communication system that will allow for the best possible project to be built.
These fundamentals are crucial to the successful construction of a self-storage project. As we listen to our clients talk to us about their business plan and expectations from their supplier/erector we are continually reminded by them how important the schedule and budget are to their financial success. After all, isn’t it every developer’s desire to bring their project in on budget and on time? I haven’t met a developer/owner yet who wouldn’t answer this question with a resounding YES! And then throw in another qualifier by saying, “and don’t forget to meet my high quality standards too”
